Deaf History Month 2022
Pensacola, Fla. (March 14, 2022) – Deaf History Month is underway through April 15. Global Connections to Employment (GCE) embraces diversity and inclusion, and we support employment opportunities for those who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
We recognize the need for accommodations to ensure job success, and we want to help the communities we serve know how to connect with this group of skilled and talented workers. Considerations for effective interactions include:
- The more inclusive way to reference this group is to say “Deaf and hard of hearing” or “Deaf” instead of “hearing impaired.”
- Ask Deaf persons how they prefer to communicate (writing, interpreter, sign language, etc.)
- Ask your organization for an appropriate accommodation to communicate with a Deaf person.
- When working with an interpreter, give time before a meeting so that the interpreter and Deaf participant(s) to work through necessary logistics and set up.
Inclusive, thoughtful communication is critical to achieving work success. Meeting and getting to know our community members who are Deaf or hard of hearing can reveal untapped talents.
