Pensacola, Fla. (April 2, 2019)–During April we observe Alcohol Awareness Month. The No. 1 abused substance is still alcohol. Observances like this one help others understand the disease, reduce stigma and encourage the community to focus on treatments. A few tips to share include:

· Volunteering can improve your mental health and improve your attitude. 

·  Caring for a pet can help you cope with alcohol abuse triggers such as depression, anxiety and stress. 

·  Conversation starters for a loved one include:

·  Practicing mindfulness such as meditation or yoga can complement your recovery journey. 

·  Have you ever wondered how many calories are in your alcoholic drink of choice? Check out this online resource:

·  Make a list of the pros and cons of drinking too much and reflect on it often during your recovery.

·  Instead of thinking, "I ’m not allowed to drink," remind yourself that you are in control. It's your choice.

·  Have a response ready when offered a drink: No, thank you. I'm abstaining while I focus on my health.

· Start recovery with small changes, like tracking how much and how often you drink. Then set limits.

·  Drinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of injury, violence, drowning, liver disease, and some types of cancer.
