National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Pensacola, Fla. (October 1, 2015) – Where is the single, largest, U.S. Navy galley located? Right here in Pensacola, Florida aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola. On average more than 9,000 meals are prepared and served each day, and much of that production is made possible by people with disabilities.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and one local employer has connected hundreds of people with disabilities to jobs just like the positions at NAS Pensacola.
Global Connections to Employment (GCE) is part of the Vocational Services division of Lakeview Center and the organization employs approximately 500 local community members at 28 sites in the three-county, Gulf Coast area. More than 1,600 people work at sites across the nation in 13 states and the District of Columbia.
"Nearly 80 percent of people with disabilities do not have jobs, yet research shows they want to work, and employers see great value in their contributions," said Rich Gilmartin, GCE president. "We are deeply committed to removing barriers to employment for this group. They are some of the most honest, dedicated and loyal workers we have in this nation."
GCE provides a variety of services to military installations, health care organizations and IT facilities. Visit eLakeviewCenter.org/GulfCoastEnterprises/Successes.aspx to watch inspiring videos about some of their successes, amidst great odds.
An affiliate of Baptist Health Care, Lakeview Center Inc. is a network of behavioral health, vocational and child protective services. These services address a broad spectrum of human needs, reflecting a longstanding commitment to helping people overcome life's challenges.
